The Homalco First Nation, owners of 100.7 The Raven, is working on a follow-up to Xwémalhkwu Hero Stories: A Graphic Novel.
The novel, launched in November of 2024, is based on sacred recordings of Homalco First Nation Elders, and includes three illustrated stories depicting historic moments in Coast Salish history.
It emerged from recordings of Homalco Elders from the early 90's, and has also been produced into a mini podcast series by the Raven.
The sale of the novel helped fund Homalco’s language and cultural programs, including for the 2025 Tribal Journey from Campbell River to Sooke.
The funds paid for food, fuel for support boats and other amenities required to make sure youth and elders were comfortable along the way.
Now, thanks to UBC Comic Studies Cluster and Education Without Borders Canada, the Nation has announced it will be developing a second graphic novel.
Award-winning podcaster, journalist, and HFN member Tchadas Leo, says for the second novel, they’ll be bringing back one of the previous artists, Valen Onstine, as well as giving an opportunity to a new Indigenous Graphic artist, yet to be determined.
Additionally, Leo says thanks to UBC once again, the first graphic novel is being partly digitized into an open source teaching guide.
Not only will it appear as it does in the novel, Leo says there will also be a fully Indigenous language version of the graphic novel and a French version for French immersion and francophone teachers to use in their classrooms.
