The City of Courtenay has provided an update on work to upgrade the riverfront with the demolition of three buildings on Anderton Avenue along the Courtenay River now complete.
All buildings have been removed, hazardous materials managed, construction debris cleared, and gravel and fencing installed to secure the area until the next steps for the properties move forward.
Mayor Bob Wells says it’s one of many improvements to the downtown core that will lead to safer conditions and more opportunities to enjoy the riverfront.
Demolition of the former Bridge Lounge, Cona Hostel and Anderton Arms buildings began in June and was completed earlier this month. It wasn’t a simple tear-down, as the work required the removal of asbestos, and protective measures to safeguard the river.
With the buildings now gone, the City says it can plan for the removal of the failing retaining wall, followed by shoreline restoration and planning for the long-term use of the land. Council and city staff plan to gather input from the community in shaping the vision over the coming year.
