The City of Campbell River is adding eight additional spaces to the Homewood temporary housing facility, bringing the total number of units to 48.
The City says it is in response to continued community need and the success of the Homewood initiative.
Homewood, operated by Lookout Housing and Health Society, opened in November of last year.
It was launched by the City, in partnership with the Province, to help people experiencing homelessness and living in encampments to come indoors safely.
The site originally offered 40 private sleeping units across five modular buildings, with shared amenities and 24/7 on-site support.
The expansion includes a new modular building with eight private units, each equipped with a bed, desk, storage space, and a locking door.
Residents receive daily meals, case planning, skills training, and referrals to health and community support.
“Homewood has made a meaningful impact in Campbell River since opening in 2024, improving lives and strengthening our community,” said Mayor Kermit Dahl.
“This expansion reflects Council’s ongoing commitment to addressing homelessness and improving community safety through strong partnerships and strategic investment.”
Building on the 40 existing spaces, which are supported through a partnership with the Province and the City, the City is investing up to $500,000 to purchase the eight-unit modular building and carry out essential site improvements, including extending power and relocating fencing.
The new units, which are expected to open in the fall of 2025, will be prioritized for people who have been living in the Campbell River area for at least two years and have been staying in local shelters or encampments.
