As a new school year begins and to keep students and staff safe, the Province of British Columbia is establishing access zones for B.C.’s K-12 schools under the Safe Access to Schools Act.

Under the Safe Access to Schools Act, protests and other harmful or disruptive behaviour are prohibited within 20 metres of school property during school hours and extracurricular activities.

The Province says it has received reports of 25 protest disruptions outside schools since the zones were first introduced in 2024, including five during the last school year.

Police can be called to intervene when violations occur.

Parents, caregivers and families can reach out to their local school district with any questions they may have.

In spring of this year, the repeal date of the Safe Access to Schools Act was extended from July 1st of this year to July 1st, 2028.
