More than 40 residents have been rehomed as work continues on a project to help reshape downtown Campbell River.

The City bought three properties last year, including Harbourside Inn, a vacant lot at 1352 Shoppers Row and a commercial building at 1362 Shoppers Row.

It’s part of the “Reimagine the Row” project.

In an update, the City says it continues to match tenants with housing that reflects their needs.

They've been able to rehome 40 of the original tenants, with five remaining, the majority of which are currently in the process of transitioning to long-term care or supportive housing.

The update said many are experiencing improved living conditions, including better on-site support, such as accommodating mobility needs and locations that are more desirable, such as being closer to family members, essential services and community amenities.

Mayor Kermit Dahl says the project is a significant step forward for the community in creating a safer and revitalized downtown. He says the development will enhance the vibrancy of Shoppers Row.

“Throughout this project, we have also prioritized the more vulnerable members of our community, including the current residents of Harbourside Inn, who have been receiving continuous rehoming support from the City, and other community members who are reliant on social services,” he said.

The next phase of the project will begin in the coming weeks as existing tenancies end and the City prepares the building for demolition.

A dinner program will be run by the Salvation Army with free wraps and sandwiches June 30th to August 31st.

Also, free access to showers at the Community Centre will be available, and $5,000 in funding towards vouchers to local laundromats.

Dahl says the new programs are just a few of the ways that we are addressing community well-being.

City staff, the Mayor and Council will be at several community events and pop-ups to talk about the project over the summer.

The first pop-up is on Sunday, June 15th at the Campbell River Farmers Market.

Future dates and locations will be shared on the City’s Get Involved page and posted to City social media channels.

More information on the project is available at Get Involved Campbell River.
