One of the largest private-sector investments in Canadian history is officially moving ahead on B.C.’s north coast.
LNG Canada has made its final investment decision on a roughly $33-billion expansion of its liquefied natural gas facility in Kitimat.
Phase Two will add two new processing units, known as trains, doubling the facility’s annual production capacity from 14 million to 28 million tonnes of LNG.
Prime Minister Mark Carney says the expansion would make LNG Canada the second-largest facility of its kind in the world.
Construction is expected to create more than 4,000 direct jobs in Kitimat.
A proposed expansion of the Coastal GasLink pipeline could require another 2,100 workers during peak construction.
The project also includes an opportunity for five First Nations to invest up to $1 billion for an ownership interest connected to a new LNG storage tank.
LNG Canada shipped its first cargo from Kitimat in June 2025, giving Canadian natural gas producers direct access to overseas markets from the West Coast.
The company says the expansion will build on infrastructure already in place at the site, with construction expected to begin this year.
