The Strathcona Regional District is developing a Poverty Reduction Plan that outlines goals and actions designed to decrease the impact of poverty within the community.

The plan is being developed in partnership with the City of Campbell River and the Campbell River and District Coalition to End Homelessness, along with other government agencies and organizations.

The purpose is to create a clear path forward to improve living conditions and increase the opportunities available to those living in poverty.

The SRD’s Poverty Reduction Plan will provide in depth research, analysis, and recommendations related to eight priority action areas: Housing families, children, and youth / Education and training / Employment / Income support / Social support / Discrimination and stigma / Safe, affordable, transportation.

The SRD has received $147,700 from the Union of B.C. Municipalities Poverty Reduction Planning and Action Program to move things along for the region. There’s also some cash from the Province.

The District says engagement with municipalities, First Nations, community organizations, service providers, and people with lived and living experience and the larger community will be an important part of the creation of the Poverty Reduction Plan.

Several forums will be held this month as the SRD looks for feedback from the public.

Attend a two-hour session in your community and enter for a chance to win door prizes.

Meals and child entertainment will be provided and no registration is required.

Keeping Our Word

The word "éy7á7juuthem" means “Language of our People” and is the ancestral tongue of the Homalco, Tla’amin, Klahoose and K’ómoks First Nations, with dialectic differences in each community.

It is pronounced "eye-ya-jooth-hem."
