Feds Making It Easier To Replace Documentation Lost To Wildfires

Thursday, July 3, 2025 at 7:14 AM

By Jay Herrington

The Government of Canada announced special measures for those who need to replace or extend vital documents or restore their status in Canada because of wild fires.

With the season in full swing across the country, the federal government is making it easier for people who lose important documentation in wildfires.

Canadian citizens and permanent residents whose passports, citizenship certificates, permanent resident cards or other Canadian travel documents are lost, damaged or made inaccessible by wildfires can apply for free replacements.

If they already paid to replace documents because of wildfires, on or after April 1st, they can request a refund.

Temporary residents, including international students, temporary foreign workers and other visitors, who were directly affected by wildfires can replace their status documents and apply to restore or extend their status in Canada, or to renew their work or study permit free of charge.

Additionally, as of June 11th, application and biometric fees are being waived for foreign emergency services personnel coming to Canada to help fight wildfires.

The measures are in effect until November 30th.

To apply or for more information, visit Government of Canada.
